Bayside Youth Mentoring Program
VIC Type of Program: One to OneLocation: South Melborune
The aim of the program is to prevent ‘at risk’ young people in the community from becoming ‘high risk’ by linking them to trained and accredited adult mentors. The BYM program can assist young people who are: •Aged 10-21 years of age •Reside within, or have links to City of Bayside •Are referred from families, friends, schools or community agencies Young people referred to the program may face the following issues: •Interpersonal conflicts or disruptions within their family or personal networks •Isolation from family, peers, school and/or community •Experimenting with alcohol or illicit drug taking •Emotional or behavioral issues •Lack of social skills •Limited parental support through illness, distance or other issues •Low self esteem •Bullying from peers By providing an ‘at risk’ young person with a suitable mentor, they have the opportunity to: •Develop a significant relationship with an adult who can offer support, advice and assistance •Develop links with recreation and other positive social activities •Strengthen the development of positive self-esteem •Manage the transition form adolescence into adulthood and •Experience a sense of belonging to individuals, family and the community A mentor is a volunteer from the community who: •Has undergone a police check, Working with Children Check and medical check •Has completed a training program •Has been successful in the interview and assessment process •Receives support during office hours and is referred elsewhere outside these times. •Receives constant reviews during their role as a mentor •Is committed to the program and the young person (One - four hours a week for up to two years) A mentor is NOT a counsellor Families of the young person and the mentor are not involved in the visits or activities. L2P - Learner Driver Mentor Program (Brimbank)

In July 2008, the Victorian Government introduced road safety initiatives that saw a requirement for learner drivers to obtain 120 hours mandatory driving practice prior to obtaining their provisional licence. This move was based on research proving that 120 hours of driving practice in a number of different driving conditions can significantly reduce the likelihood of crash involvement for young drivers. While the introduction of the new regulations for learner drivers will have significant beneficial effects on the safety of young Victorians, it is recognised that it will be challenging for some young people who do not have easy access to suitable supervising drivers, a suitable vehicle, or both to obtain the mandatory on road driving experience. L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program - Moreland

The Moreland L2P Program aims to assist learner drivers (16 - 21 years) who do not have access to significant adults or a suitable motor vehcile to gain the minimum 120 hours driving experience as prescribed under the Victorian Graduated System (GLS). Learner Drivers also have access to 7 professional driving lessons as part of the program. Linkz is aimed at supporting and encouraging young teenagers through transition into secondary school with the aid of a mentor who meets regularly with the participant over the year. The Smith Family's tertiary 'Learning for Life' scholarship program supports university and TAFE studies through a scholarship towards textbooks and other educational expenses, and through the opportunity for these students to have a mentor. The Tertiary Scholarship Scheme is designed to support the transition of university and TAFE students through their period of study and into the workforce. Scholarship students in their 1st year of study are matched with a career mentor who can offer an alternative avenue of support for these young people from financially disadvantaged backgrounds where it is not always possible to draw upon parental experience or social networks. The Village Project
