The Parents Mentoring Project (PMP) is a consumer driven program founded upon the value and strength of having a trusted guide. We all need extra support and advice with parenting; parenting while also coping with a mental illness brings its own set of challenges. Mentees are parents with a mental illness who would like the support of someone who has been through similar experiences to assist them in their recovery. They must have at least one child under the age of 21. Mentors are parents who are at a point in their recovery from mental illness to be able to assist others in managing parenting while having a mental illness. Mentors do not function as quasi professionals. They should be seen as part of the mentee's support network. Being a mentor is voluntary. We provide a free training course for mentors to learn the skills which will be essential in their supportive role with the mentees. The course consists of four hour classes once a week for five weeks. There are also monthly support sessions, which provide further training and support for mentors.
